Belts and Ranks

To accurately track the progress of our students, Pennell’s Dojo employs a 12 tier ranking system.

Often, new students inquire as to how long it takes to get to Shodan (Black Belt).  The amount of time varies by individual, and relies heavily on both your abilities and how often you train.  Achieving Shodan is no easy task (nor should it be).  It will take hard training and dedication.  On top of the physical demands required to reach Shodan, there are also the mental and emotional requirements – these include maturity, an understanding of Karate beyond that of it’s usefulness as a ‘combat’ skill, and an appreciation for the art – its history and philosophy.
